In recent months, we have received questions from customers and healthcare professionals regarding unusually low-priced Wassen products appearing online and through unofficial channels. To address these concerns transparently, Wassen International has issued an official statement clarifying its position and reaffirming its support for its appointed distributor, ActivHealth / WellbeingSG.

Unofficial Sellers Are Not Approved

Wassen International has confirmed that these heavily discounted products are not arranged, approved, or endorsed by either Wassen International or ActivHealth. Such listings undermine the investment and role of the official distributor, create confusion around pricing and availability, and raise legitimate concerns about supply chain integrity—especially among healthcare professionals.

What Wassen International Is Doing

Wassen International has clearly stated that it does not condone or support these activities. It actively communicates with its UK exporters and partners to ensure they do not knowingly supply products that will be diverted into markets where an appointed distributor already exists. When credible information about unauthorised reselling is received, Wassen investigates and takes appropriate action within legal and commercial limits, including issuing formal warnings or revisiting supply terms.

Legal and Practical Limitations

Despite these efforts, Wassen International also acknowledges the practical and legal limitations involved. Once products pass through multiple independent intermediaries—such as wholesalers, consolidators, or online marketplace sellers—it becomes difficult to trace or control individual shipments. This makes it challenging to guarantee how those products have been stored, transported, or handled.

Why Purchasing from Us Matters

Buying Wassen products through WellbeingSG, ensures:

Products come from a known, quality-assured supply chain

Storage and handling meet strict requirements

Access to accurate product information, medical support, and after-sales service

While some products sold via unofficial channels may still be genuine, Wassen International clearly states that it cannot guarantee the same level of quality assurance or support for items purchased outside authorised channels.

Our Commitment to You

At WellbeingSG and ActivHealth, our priority is to provide safe, authentic, and clinically supported products you can trust. We work closely with our brand partners to ensure transparency, integrity, and continuity of supply—so you can make informed decisions with confidence.

If you encounter suspicious listings or have questions about product authenticity, we encourage you to reach out to ActivHealth directly. Together with Wassen International, we remain committed to supporting healthcare professionals and consumers with high-quality products delivered through trusted, authorised channels.

Introduction: Anxiety, Avocado Toast, and the Gut-Brain Connection

As a millennial, stress and anxiety have always been familiar companions. Balancing work, social pressures, and the elusive idea of self-care felt like an endless battle. My Instagram feed was full of friends promoting meditation apps, yoga sessions, and avocado toast brunches as cures for mental fog and emotional fatigue. But behind curated images, the daily reality was persistent anxiety and unpredictable moods. That’s when I stumbled upon something new: the gut-brain connection.

Discovering the Gut-Brain Axis: It’s More Than Just Yogurt

Initially, probiotics to me meant yogurt commercials or kombucha in fancy bottles. But deeper research led me to the term “psychobiotics,” probiotics that specifically influence mood and mental health. The idea that gut bacteria could influence my anxiety and stress levels intrigued me. Could this be the missing link in my mental health journey?

Gut Health 101: Understanding the Microbiome

The human gut is home to trillions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses, collectively known as the microbiome. These microbes do more than aid digestion—they produce neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, regulate stress hormones like cortisol, and modulate inflammation. An imbalanced gut microbiome (dysbiosis) is increasingly linked to anxiety, depression, and mood swings.

Millennials and Mental Health: The Unspoken Epidemic

According to recent statistics, millennials report higher stress, anxiety, and depression levels compared to previous generations. Factors like financial insecurity, social media pressures, and chronic work stress play major roles. I was part of this statistic, frequently feeling overwhelmed and anxious without clear reasons.

My Experiment with PS128: A Promising Psychobiotic

After extensive research, one probiotic strain caught my attention—Lactiplantibacillus plantarum PS128. Originally isolated from fermented Taiwanese vegetables, PS128 was different due to its documented ability to affect neurotransmitter pathways and stress responses.

Scientific studies showed PS128’s potential benefits, including improved mood, reduced anxiety, and better sleep quality. Encouraged by clinical data and positive testimonials, I decided to give it a try.

Starting PS128: Skepticism and Small Changes

I started with a daily capsule containing PS128, pairing it with breakfast to form a habit. Initially, I felt skeptical. How could bacteria in a capsule significantly impact my mood? The first week passed uneventfully, but by the end of the second week, I noticed subtle shifts.

My sleep quality improved—fewer midnight awakenings and more restful mornings. My baseline anxiety felt less overwhelming. These weren’t miraculous changes, but they were noticeable and meaningful.

Science Behind PS128: Why it Works for Mood

Delving into research, I learned that PS128 acts on the gut-brain axis by increasing serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain. Animal studies demonstrated reduced stress hormones like cortisol and enhanced production of mood-stabilizing neurotransmitters. This scientific validation reassured my skeptical mind that my experiences weren’t just placebo effects.

Clinical Studies and Real-World Impact

Human clinical studies echoed my experience. A study involving stressed adults revealed PS128 significantly improved mood, anxiety, and sleep quality over eight weeks. Another trial with children facing anxiety and behavioral issues also reported significant improvements. The consistency across research and personal experience made PS128 feel increasingly credible and reassuring.

Probiotics in a Holistic Mental Health Routine

While PS128 was helpful, mental health demands a holistic approach. Alongside PS128, I incorporated regular physical activity, mindfulness meditation, and a balanced diet rich in fiber and nutrients that support gut health. These combined efforts amplified the positive effects of PS128, highlighting the power of holistic wellness.

Overcoming Stigma: Millennials and Mental Health Conversations

Discussing gut health and probiotics opened up new conversations with my friends about mental health. Millennials often normalize anxiety and burnout, rarely discussing actionable solutions. Sharing my journey helped break the stigma, encouraging others to consider gut health and psychobiotics as valuable tools in mental health management.

A Balanced Gut for a Balanced Life: Sustaining Positive Changes

Months into taking PS128, my mood felt significantly more balanced. I handled stress better, slept deeply, and experienced fewer anxious episodes. Maintaining gut health through PS128 became a cornerstone of my mental wellness routine, demonstrating the long-term value of gut-brain care.

Future of Gut-Brain Research: Hope for Millennial Mental Health

Ongoing research continues to validate psychobiotics like PS128 as promising tools for mental health. Future studies aim to further unravel the mechanisms behind gut-brain interactions, potentially paving the way for more personalized probiotic treatments.

Conclusion: A Personal Invitation to Explore Gut Health

My journey with PS128 taught me the profound connection between gut health and mental wellness. For millennials battling anxiety, stress, or emotional fatigue, exploring psychobiotics could offer valuable relief. It’s not a miracle cure but rather a vital piece of a holistic mental health puzzle.

I encourage fellow millennials to explore this innovative approach, embracing science-backed solutions like PS128 to enhance emotional well-being and resilience in our increasingly demanding world.

Introduction

Omega fatty acids, notably Omega-3 (docosahexaenoic acid [DHA] and eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA]) and Omega-6 (gamma-linolenic acid [GLA] and arachidonic acid [AA]), have been extensively studied for their roles in neurological and psychological health. This meta-analysis critically examines existing research to evaluate the efficacy of these fatty acids in various conditions, including mood disorders, cognitive functioning, neurodevelopmental disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Mechanism and Clinical Impact

Neurophysiological Mechanisms

EPA and DHA integrate into neuronal cell membranes, facilitating fluidity and permeability, essential for neurotransmission. They modulate neuroinflammatory pathways, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress, which have been implicated in numerous neurological disorders.

Depression and Mood Disorders

A significant body of research supports the antidepressant properties of Omega-3 fatty acids. A 2018 meta-analysis involving 26 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with over 2,000 participants indicated substantial benefits, particularly with EPA-rich formulations (≥60% EPA), showing reduced depressive symptoms (standardized mean difference [SMD] = -0.28; p=0.004) (Liao et al., 2018).

Further, Grosso et al. (2014) analyzed 19 studies (11 clinical depression and 8 subclinical depression), revealing a moderate but consistent efficacy (SMD = 0.38), highlighting that EPA-rich supplements significantly improved depressive symptoms compared to placebo.

ADHD and Cognitive Function in Children

Studies investigating Omega-3 supplements, particularly EPA and DHA, in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) reveal modest but promising results. A systematic review indicated small yet statistically significant improvements in attention span, impulsivity, and hyperactivity (Bloch & Qawasmi, 2011). However, efficacy varies across studies, and overall consensus highlights moderate benefits rather than robust clinical changes.

Cognitive Aging and Dementia

Regarding cognitive decline and dementia, research outcomes have been mixed. Cochrane reviews and meta-analyses have consistently demonstrated limited evidence for reversing cognitive impairment or significantly delaying Alzheimer’s disease progression with Omega-3 supplements. Some studies have shown marginal cognitive improvements in healthy older adults, yet these results lack consistency across various cognitive measures (Mazereeuw et al., 2012).

Omega-6 Fatty Acids: Clinical Implications

Mechanisms of Action

Omega-6 fatty acids like AA typically induce pro-inflammatory pathways. However, specific derivatives like GLA metabolize into dihomogamma-linolenic acid (DGLA), which generates anti-inflammatory prostaglandins, indicating nuanced biological roles.

Anti-inflammatory and Neuropathic Health

Research highlights that GLA supplementation, notably through evening primrose oil, demonstrates efficacy in alleviating diabetic neuropathy and nerve-related discomfort, although robust data on cognitive improvement remains limited. A meta-analysis published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies (2024) emphasized the beneficial anti-inflammatory potential of GLA, yet its application in neurodegenerative diseases remains inadequately explored.

Comparative Meta-Analysis of Omega-3 and Omega-6

Clinical Efficacy

A meta-analytic comparison of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids across psychological and neurological disorders reveals distinct patterns:

Omega-3 (particularly EPA-rich formulations) shows consistent efficacy in mood disorders, especially depression.

Omega-3 demonstrates moderate efficacy in ADHD and cognitive functions in young populations.

Omega-6 GLA offers limited yet notable efficacy in neuropathic and inflammatory conditions but lacks sufficient evidence for cognitive or psychological disorders.

Safety and Dosage Recommendations

Clinical guidelines recommend EPA-rich Omega-3 supplements (≥60% EPA) at doses around 1 gram per day for depression and mood stabilization. DHA-focused formulations have not demonstrated equivalent efficacy in mood disorders but remain essential for overall brain health.

For Omega-6 supplementation, caution is advised due to the pro-inflammatory potential of AA. Thus, maintaining a balanced ratio between Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids is crucial, ideally ranging from 1:1 to 4:1, contrasting starkly with typical Western diets, which can reach ratios of 10:1 to 30:1, promoting inflammation and associated neurological dysfunction.

Implications for Clinical Practice

Depression Treatment

Integrating Omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA-rich supplements, into treatment protocols for depression can offer substantial adjunctive benefits. Clinicians should consider incorporating these supplements in comprehensive treatment plans alongside conventional antidepressants and psychotherapeutic interventions.

ADHD Management

For pediatric populations, Omega-3 supplements may serve as a complementary approach to conventional ADHD treatments, showing modest improvements in behavioral and cognitive symptoms. However, expectations should remain realistic regarding the magnitude of therapeutic outcomes.

Neurodegenerative Disease Prevention

Current evidence does not support Omega-3 or Omega-6 supplementation as effective standalone interventions for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Still, they can potentially contribute to a preventative nutritional strategy emphasizing dietary balance and anti-inflammatory dietary patterns.

Future Research Directions

Further large-scale, long-term randomized controlled trials are essential to elucidate the specific cognitive and psychological benefits of both Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Particularly, studies exploring the potential synergistic effects of these supplements in combination therapies warrant additional investigation.

References and Links to Studies

Conclusion

In conclusion, Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA-rich supplements, exhibit significant potential for treating mood disorders and providing modest benefits in pediatric cognitive and behavioral conditions. Conversely, Omega-6 fatty acids, specifically GLA, show promise in neuropathic and inflammatory disorders but lack substantial evidence supporting cognitive health benefits. Balancing the dietary intake of Omega-3 and Omega-6 remains crucial to optimizing neurological and psychological outcomes. Further rigorous research will be essential in defining precise clinical applications and enhancing therapeutic efficacy.

1. Understanding the Daily Struggles of Parkinson’s Caregiving

As a healthcare professional working closely with Parkinson’s patients and their families, I see firsthand how caregiving can be both rewarding and exhausting. The slow progression of symptoms—tremors, stiffness, slowed movement—brings emotional and physical challenges not only for the patient but also for the caregiver.

Many caregivers share that mornings are the hardest. Dressing, eating, and even getting out of bed can take twice as long as before. Mood fluctuations and anxiety often add another layer of complexity. Over time, these daily struggles take a toll, leaving caregivers feeling helpless and in search of even the smallest improvements.

While there is no cure for Parkinson’s, small interventions that improve quality of life can make a profound difference for both patient and caregiver. One emerging area of interest is gut-brain health, and specifically, the role of a unique probiotic strain called PS128.

2. Why Gut Health Matters in Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s is classically known as a neurological disorder, but research now shows it also significantly affects the gut. In fact, many patients experience gastrointestinal issues such as constipation or bloating years before motor symptoms appear. This has led to growing recognition of the gut-brain axis—a communication network between the digestive system and the central nervous system.

When the gut microbiome is imbalanced, it can influence the brain through immune responses, hormonal pathways, and neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. Since Parkinson’s involves the degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons, supporting gut health may have a beneficial effect on mood, cognition, and even movement.

This is where psychobiotics—probiotics that positively affect the gut-brain axis—come into consideration.

3. Introducing PS128

PS128 is a specific probiotic strain, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum PS128, originally isolated from fermented Taiwanese vegetables. Unlike typical probiotics focused on digestion alone, PS128 is a psychobiotic, meaning it may help regulate the gut-brain axis by:

Promoting healthy gut flora

Modulating stress hormones like cortisol

Supporting neurotransmitter pathways for dopamine and serotonin

These mechanisms make PS128 an interesting complementary option for managing non-motor symptoms and supporting overall quality of life in Parkinson’s patients.

4. What the Research Says About PS128 in Parkinson’s

Clinical evidence, while still emerging, is promising:

12-Week Pilot Study in Parkinson’s Patients
In a pilot trial, 25 Parkinson’s patients supplemented with PS128 for 12 weeks. Results showed an 11–14% improvement in motor scores measured by the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), along with better quality-of-life scores. Importantly, no serious side effects were reported.

Improvements in Mood and Sleep
In adults under high stress, PS128 supplementation has been shown to improve sleep quality, reduce anxiety, and enhance mood regulation—issues that commonly affect Parkinson’s patients.

These findings do not indicate that PS128 replaces medication or halts disease progression. Rather, it may serve as a gentle adjunct, improving certain symptoms that matter greatly in daily life.

5. Real-Life Outcomes

Beyond clinical trials, there are documented caregiver accounts of small but meaningful improvements:

Hexiang’s Experience
After several months of PS128 supplementation, Hexiang, a 75-year-old patient, regained enough hand control to peel a mango independently—a task he hadn’t managed in over a year. His caregiver also noticed clearer speech and better mood stability.

Mr. Liu’s Story
Mr. Liu, with early-onset Parkinson’s, found that within the first month of taking PS128, his fine motor control improved enough to button his shirts again. He reported better mental clarity and reduced fatigue.

For caregivers, these changes translate to less frustration and more moments of independence for their loved ones.

6. How to Integrate PS128 Safely

In my professional experience, PS128 is well tolerated and easy to integrate into a care routine. Here are general recommendations:

Take one capsule daily, ideally with meals.

Do not discontinue prescribed Parkinson’s medications.

Monitor for any changes in mood, sleep, or motor control.

Always consult a neurologist or physician before starting any supplement.

Most families report noticing mood or sleep improvements within 2–4 weeks, with potential motor benefits after 8–12 weeks.

7. Combining PS128 with Holistic Care

Managing Parkinson’s effectively often requires a multifaceted approach:

Balanced nutrition rich in fiber and antioxidants

Gentle, regular exercise or physiotherapy to maintain mobility

Occupational therapy for daily living tasks

Social engagement to prevent isolation and depression

Stress management techniques like mindfulness or breathing exercises

Appropriate medications tailored to the patient’s needs

Gut-brain support like PS128 as a complementary tool

This layered approach provides the best chance of maintaining independence and quality of life for as long as possible.

8. Common Caregiver Questions

Is PS128 safe?
Yes. It is GRAS-certified (Generally Recognized as Safe) and has undergone clinical testing in both children and adults without serious adverse effects.

Does it replace standard Parkinson’s treatment?
No. It serves as a complement to, not a replacement for, conventional therapies.

How do I know if it’s working?
Keep a simple journal tracking sleep, mood, motor ability, and emotional wellbeing. Look for gradual changes rather than dramatic improvements.

What if there is no benefit?
It is safe to discontinue. PS128 is not harmful but may not work for everyone.

9. Why Small Improvements Matter

As a healthcare professional, I often remind caregivers that Parkinson’s care is about quality of life, not perfection. A steadier hand that can hold a spoon, a better night’s sleep, or a brighter mood may seem like small things—but they create enormous relief for patients and their families.

PS128 is not a cure. But if it can bring even minor improvements, it can lighten the caregiver’s load and restore a sense of hope.

10. Key Research References

Final Thoughts

As someone who has worked with countless Parkinson’s patients and their families, I understand the emotional weight of caregiving. While no single supplement or therapy can reverse the disease, tools like PS128 may offer gentle, evidence-backed support for mood, motor control, and overall wellbeing.

If you’re considering adding PS128 to your loved one’s care plan, consult their healthcare provider and approach it as one part of a holistic strategy. Together, small steps can lead to meaningful improvements.

You are not alone in this journey. Healthcare professionals, support groups, and emerging research are here to help you and your loved one live each day with more dignity and comfort.

Hello, fellow parent 🌸

Every morning feels like a tightrope walk.

You guide your child through breakfast. You coax them into their clothes. Sometimes, they’re calm. Other times, a meltdown explodes without warning.

I know this dance well. My daughter, Mei, 8 years old, was diagnosed with autism and ADHD. We love her fiercely—but the challenges? They’re heartbreaking.

Speech therapy, sensory breaks, mindfulness apps, schedule charts… we tried it all. And yet, some mornings, Mei still seemed lost in worry or overwhelm.

Then, a friend suggested something new: PS128. A probiotic she’d read about in science journals. “It might help with mood and focus,” she said softly.

Cue skepticism. Another supplement?

But as we dove in, I discovered something gentle, promising—and worth sharing with you, mom to mom.

What is PS128?

PS128 stands for Lactiplantibacillus plantarum PS128—a specific strain of probiotic discovered in Taiwanese fermented vegetables.

But let’s skip the bio jargon. PS128 is a psychobiotic: a friendly gut bacterium that can gently support mood, behavior, and cognitive clarity.

It’s not a medicine. It’s not a cure. Think of it as a tiny helper in your child’s gut, working alongside therapies and routines you already trust.

Research on PS128: Autism Trials

One of the strongest pieces of evidence comes from a 2019 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Taiwan involving boys ages 7–15 with autism spectrum disorder.

In just four weeks of PS128, these children showed:

Less defiance and oppositional behavior

Better attention, especially in younger kids

Reductions in anxiety and rule-breaking

This wasn’t a small survey—it was a rigorous clinical trial showing real improvements in behavior.

Real-world data supports lab studies

A real-world Italian study (Mensi et al., 2021) involved 131 autistic children and adolescents who took PS128 or other probiotics.

Results?

Children taking PS128 showed greater behavioral improvement

Fewer side effects compared to other probiotics

Notably stronger benefits in younger children

This study echoed clinical trials, underscoring that PS128 isn’t just lab theory—it’s working in real families. You can read the details here.

PS128 + Oxytocin: Synergy in Therapy

What if a probiotic and hormone therapy worked even better together?

In a 2021 MDPI trial, autistic children took PS128 alongside oxytocin over 28 weeks.

Results showed significant improvements in:

Social responsiveness

Behavior checklists

Overall clinical impressions

This suggests PS128 might enhance traditional therapies—a hopeful option for families exploring combined approaches.

PS128 & ADHD: More Than a Side Benefit

Kids with Tourette’s often have ADHD too. A 2021 PS128 clinical trial involving children with Tourette’s syndrome showed:

No change in tics

But significant improvements in ADHD symptoms—especially attention and impulse control

That’s important for our neurodivergent children who fight double battles. PS128 may help both, even if it’s not treating the tic itself.

How PS128 Helps: Simple science

Picture your child’s gut as their home base.

If the floors are messy (bad bacteria), the brain’s signals get jumbled. PS128 helps tidy things:

Promotes friendly gut bacteria

Reduces gut inflammation

Boosts mood molecules like serotonin and dopamine

In short: a happier gut can help a calmer child—even on stressful days.

How to Reduce Stress Hormones: Proven Strategies for a Healthier You

In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become an almost unavoidable part of life. While some stress is normal, chronic stress can lead to elevated levels of stress hormones like cortisol, which can negatively impact your health. Fortunately, there are effective strategies you can use to reduce stress hormones and promote a more balanced, healthier lifestyle. In this blog, we’ll explore practical tips and methods to help you manage and lower your stress hormones.

Understanding Stress Hormones

Before diving into the solutions, it’s essential to understand what stress hormones are and how they affect the body. The primary stress hormone is cortisol, produced by the adrenal glands. While cortisol is crucial for your body’s fight-or-flight response, elevated levels due to chronic stress can lead to various health issues, including weight gain, high blood pressure, and impaired immune function.

1. Engage in Regular Physical Activity to Reduce Stress Hormones

Exercise is one of the most effective ways to lower stress hormones. Physical activity stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers and mood elevators. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a yoga session, or a high-intensity workout, incorporating regular exercise into your routine can help manage and reduce cortisol levels.

Key Tips:

Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.

Include a mix of aerobic activities, strength training, and flexibility exercises.

2. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness and meditation are powerful tools for reducing stress and lowering cortisol levels. These practices help you stay present, reduce negative thinking, and promote relaxation. Studies have shown that even short periods of meditation can lead to significant reductions in stress hormones.

Key Tips:

Set aside 10-15 minutes each day for mindfulness or meditation.

Use apps or online resources to guide your practice if you’re new to it.

3. Get Quality Sleep to Reduce Stress Hormones

Sleep is crucial for regulating stress hormones. Poor or inadequate sleep can lead to elevated cortisol levels and increased stress. Prioritizing good sleep hygiene can help maintain a healthy balance of stress hormones.

Key Tips:

Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night.

Maintain a consistent sleep schedule and create a relaxing bedtime routine.

4. Maintain a Balanced Diet

What you eat can significantly impact your stress levels and hormone balance. A diet rich in whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, can help regulate cortisol levels and support overall well-being.

Key Tips:

Incorporate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and flaxseeds, which have been shown to reduce stress.

Limit intake of caffeine and sugar, which can exacerbate stress and increase cortisol levels.

5. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can increase cortisol levels and contribute to stress. Drinking enough water throughout the day helps maintain proper bodily functions and can prevent the rise of stress hormones.

Key Tips:

Aim to drink at least 8 glasses (2 liters) of water per day.

Adjust your intake based on your activity level and environmental conditions.

6. Connect with Loved Ones

Social support plays a crucial role in managing stress and reducing cortisol levels. Spending time with friends and family, or simply talking to someone you trust, can provide emotional support and help alleviate stress.

Key Tips:

Schedule regular social activities and stay connected with loved ones.

Consider joining a support group or engaging in community activities.

7. Engage in Relaxation Techniques

Incorporating relaxation techniques into your daily routine can help lower stress hormones and promote a sense of calm. Activities such as deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and spending time in nature can be beneficial.

Key Tips:

Practice deep breathing exercises for a few minutes several times a day.

Explore relaxation techniques that work best for you and make them a part of your routine.

What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the stomach and intestines, which together form the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms include cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation (or both). IBS is a chronic condition that requires long-term management.

Only a small percentage of people with IBS experience severe symptoms. Many individuals can manage their symptoms through dietary changes, lifestyle adjustments, and stress management. More severe symptoms can be treated with medications and counseling.

IBS does not cause changes in intestinal tissue or increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

Products and Services
WellbeingSG online store

Symptoms

Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms vary, but usually last for a long time. Common symptoms include:

Pain, cramping, or bloating in the abdomen related to bowel movements
Changes in the appearance of bowel movements
Changes in the frequency of bowel movements
Other symptoms that are often associated with it include a feeling of incomplete bowel movements and increased gas or mucus in the stool.

Video: How Irritable Bowel Syndrome Affects You

https://wellbeingsg.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/videoplayback.mp4

When to see a doctor
See your health care provider if you have a persistent change in bowel habits or other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. These may indicate a more serious condition, such as colon cancer. More serious symptoms include:

Weight loss
Nighttime diarrhea
Rectal bleeding
Iron deficiency anemia
Unexplained vomiting
Pain that is not relieved by passing gas or having a bowel movement

Causes

The exact cause of irritable bowel syndrome is unknown. Factors that seem to interfere include:

Muscle contractions in the intestine. The walls of the intestines are lined with layers of muscle that contract as they move food through the digestive tract. Contractions that are stronger and last longer than normal can cause gas, bloating, and diarrhea. Weak intestinal contractions can slow the passage of food and lead to hard, dry stools.

Nervous system Abnormalities in the nerves of the digestive system can cause you to feel more discomfort than usual when your abdomen stretches due to gas or stool. Poorly coordinated signals between your brain and intestines can cause your body to overreact to changes that normally occur in the digestive process. This causes pain, diarrhea, or constipation.

Severe infection. Irritable bowel syndrome can occur after a severe episode of diarrhea caused by bacteria or viruses. This is known as gastroenteritis. IBS may also be associated with an excess of bacteria in the intestines (bacterial overgrowth).

Stress at an early age. People exposed to stressful events, especially in childhood, often have more symptoms of IBS.

Changes in gut microbes. Examples include changes in bacteria, fungi, and viruses that normally reside in the intestines and play a key role in health. Research indicates that the microbes in people with IBS may differ from the microbes in people who have the condition.

Triggers

IBS symptoms may be triggered by:

Foods. It is not fully understood how a food allergy or intolerance affects IBS. A true food allergy usually does not cause IBS. However, many people have IBS symptoms that get worse when they eat certain foods or drinks. These include wheat, dairy products, citrus fruits, beans, cabbage, milk, and carbonated drinks.

Stress. Most people with irritable bowel syndrome have worse or more frequent symptoms during periods of increased stress. However, although stress can make symptoms worse, it does not cause them.

Risk factors

Many people have occasional symptoms of IBS. However, you are more likely to have symptoms if:

You are young. IBS most often occurs in people under age 50.
You are a woman. In the United States, IBS is more common among women. Estrogen therapy before or after menopause is also a risk factor for IBS.
You have a family history of IBS. Genes can play a role, as can shared factors in your family environment or a combination of genes and environment.
You have anxiety, depression, or other mental health problems. A history of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse could also be a risk factor.

Complications

Chronic constipation or diarrhea can lead to hemorrhoids.

In addition, IBS is associated with:

Poor quality of life. Many people with IBS report a poor quality of life. Research shows that people with IBS miss three times as many work days as people who do not have bowel symptoms.
Mood disorders. IBS symptoms can lead to depression or anxiety. Depression and anxiety, in turn, can make IBS worse.
